Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon is a 2008 Hong Kong film loosely based on parts of the Chinese classical novel Romance of Three Kingdoms. It was directed by Daniel Lee with a reported budget of US$25 million. The film is one of the two Three Kingdoms
-related films released in 2008, with the other being John Woo
's Red Cliff.
begins his military career by enlisting in the warlord Liu Bei
's camp. He befriends Luo Ping'an, a fellow soldier from his hometown of Changshan, and they declare themselves to be brothers. Luo Ping'an is determined to obtain glory and swears to not return to Changshan without it. Zhao Zilong and Luo Ping'an participate in a battle against Liu Bei's rival Cao Cao
, by following Zhuge Liang
's orders to launch a sneak attack on Cao's camp, attaining Zhao's first victory. As Liu Bei's troops are outnumbered by Cao Cao's forces, Liu is forced to retreat to Phoenix Heights, but is separated from his family during the chaos. Luo Ping'an is ordered to find and bring Liu Bei's family safely to Phoenix Heights but fails, causing Zhang Fei to thrust his spear at his heart. Zhao Zilong blocks Zhang Fei's attack and begins a spearfight against Zhang and Guan Yu
. Zhao Zilong remains undefeated after several rounds of fighting and Liu Bei, stepping into the middle of the combat to stop Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, is impressed by Zhao's skill. Zhao Zilong offers to look for Liu Bei's family in Luo Ping'an's stead, and Guan Yu and Zhang Fei assist in covering Zhao as he breaks into the enemy formation to begin his search.
Zhao Zilong makes his name in that battle by rescuing Liu Bei's infant son alone and holding off hundreds of Cao Cao's troops, even while surrounded on all sides. He fights his way out of the ranks and charges up a cliff on a horse, directly towards Cao Cao. Cao Cao is shocked and loses his personal sword to Zhao Zilong as his life is placed in peril. Zhao Zilong refrains from killing Cao Cao and leaps to safety onto another cliff. Cao Cao's granddaughter, Cao Ying, witnesses the attack and swears to capture Zhao Zilong and help her grandfather regain his pride. Zhao Zilong visits Changshan as a hero, and falls in love with a girl putting on a shadow-puppet show dedicated to him. He promises to return to Changshan for her once the country is unified under Liu Bei.
Zhao Zilong continues to fight many battles for Liu Bei and had never lost before, earning himself the title of "Invincible General" while Luo Ping'an gains no promotions. After Cao Pi
(Cao Cao's son) usurps the Han Dynasty
and proclaims himself emperor of the state of Wei
, Liu Bei declares himself emperor of Shu
to continue the bloodline of Han. Zhao Zilong is named by Liu Bei as one of the Five Tiger Generals
of Shu, along with Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao
and Huang Zhong
. As time passes, Liu Bei dies and Zhuge Liang inherits Liu's legacy, by continuing to lead military campaigns against Wei to restore the Han Dynasty. By then, Zhao Zilong is already 71, and is the last of Tiger generals remaining alive. Though Guan Xing
(Guan Yu's son) and Zhang Bao (Zhang Fei's son) were to lead a final campaign, Zhao Zilong's insistence on this being his last battle secures his position. Zhuge Liang then gives Zhao Zilong two letters, instructing him to open the first at a certain fork and the second in a crisis. Zhao Zilong reflects on the dead Five Tiger Generals when he finally meets Luo Ping'an again, still without promotion. Luo Ping'an requests that he be present at Zhao Zilong's final battle, and Zhao accepts.
At the designated fork in the road, Zhuge Liang's first letter is opened. Zhao Zilong's army is to march in one direction while the sons of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are to march in the other. After the forces are split, Zhao Zilong performs his first feat in the campaign by slaying the four sons of the enemy general Han De
. However, he is lured into a trap by Cao Ying, the commander of the Wei army, and forced to retreat to Phoenix Heights. Surrounded and with his army sustaining casualties, Zhao Zilong opens the second letter, revealing that Zhuge Liang wished for Zhao to distract the Wei army while Guan Xing and Zhang Bao proceed to capture enemy territory.
In an effort to bring down the morale of Zhao Zilong's forces, Cao Ying has the dead soldiers sent to Phoenix Heights, and is successful. In response, Zhao Zilong sends Luo Ping'an and a deputy general to deliver the sword of Cao Cao to the enemy camp. This angers Cao Ying, but she lets the two messengers go. Zhao Zilong engages Cao Ying in a duel and defeats her, letting her go. After the duel it is revealed that Cao Ying was scratched by Zhao Zilong's spear, but Zhao is badly wounded. Zhao Zilong refuses to take off his armor so that his men are unaware of his injuries. Cao Ying's forces begin to move towards Phoenix Heights, and Zhao Zilong allows his deputy generals to take all of the men into the battle. Zhao Zilong's forces launch a fierce assault on Cao Ying's army and are nearly all wiped out when Han De sacrifices himself in using gunpowder in a kamikaze
-style attack.
Zhao Zilong and Luo Ping'an watch the battle and aftermath from Phoenix Heights. Luo Ping'an reveals that he has always been deeply envious of Zhao Zilong; Zhao replies that he had always wished for Luo to be the "Invincible General". Luo Ping'an helps Zhao Zilong out of his armor and, with tears in his eyes, beats the battle drum as Zhao makes his lone charge towards the entire enemy army.

There is controversy regarding the costumes worn by the cast, as many onlookers claim that Zhao Zilong's armour resembles the samurai
's. Besides, the helmets worn by the Shu soldiers resemble the Brodie helmet
s from World War I
, while the Wei troops wear helmets similar to the French Adrian helmet

In addition, Maggie Q was said to be "miscast" and "unrealistic" due to her Eurasian appearance. Also, Maggie Q, a vegan, refused to wear or allow the use of real animal fur during the production of the film, so the costume she wore was made from faux fur instead.
