. Smalls grew up in a two-parent household along with 3 sisters and was raised in the East New York section of Brooklyn, New York.

Professional career

After ending a six year relationship in 2005, Smalls decided to take what she had learned about relationships to pen her first independent book titled, “Girl, Get Your Mind Right!”, which she published through I-Universe, a self-publishing company. While promoting, “Girl, Get Your Mind Right!”, Smalls decided to write to Gawker, a website based in New York City, a letter in first person about how great the author of the book was. The editors of the website proceeded to print the actual email and offered Smalls a job as their new Advice Columnist with her column titled “Ask Tionna”.

In 2007, Smalls started her own urban lifestyle blog entitled Talk Dat Ish. She also started her internet radio show, Talk Dat Ish Radio, on Blog Talk Radio.
Following her job at Gawker, Smalls moved to Radar Online which was followed by an online column with SLC Outsider, which was run by self-professed Gawker fan, Adam Streeter. Her contribution to SLC Outsider earned her mention in the New York Times on January 13, 2008 with an article titled, “Has Gawker Jumped the Snark” written by Allen Salkin

, is produced by Fremantle Media North and aired on April 11, 2010 on VH1. The show was picked up by Vh1 for a second season that is set to air in the Fall of 2010. In June 2010, Smalls signed a book deal with publisher, HarperCollins Publishing for an updated version of her book "Girl Get Your Mind Right!" The book is set for release in December 2010.
