Valparaíso is a town in the north central Mexican
state of Zacatecas
. It is located at 22°46′0"N 103°34′0"W on the interior plateau, 70 mi/113 km E of Zacatecas
, at an elevation of 6200 ft/1890m. Valparaiso was first a village and then hacienda along with the San Mateo and a few others formed the extensive county of Valparaiso, property of the counts of the same title one of them Don Fernando de la Capma y Cos, was a very rich man also involved in philanthropy building infrastructure for the Catholic Church. Later in 1824, Valparaiso becomes a municipality. In March 13, 1845 Valparaiso was declared a villa and in 1918 it became an independent municipality in accord with the Mexican constitution.

Military and political native of the Hacienda San Mateo, Valparaiso, was deputy in the local congress; In 1858 when the war of Reform began he became Governor of the state of Zacatecas. As a member of a group of liberals was vice president of Mexico. In December 22 of 1860 he defeated Miramon in the famous battle of Calpulalpan, closing the chapter of the war of three years. In 1861 he was appointed President of the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico. During the French intervention was in charge of the heroic resistance against the French in the city of Puebla. He later died in Saltillo Coahuila.

There were approximately 11,000 inhabitants in the town proper as of 2006. The municipality as a whole has approximately 29,000 inhabitants.
