. The village Åsskard is located in the western part of Surnadal

. The former municipality included the area around the Åsskardfjord and north of the Hamnesfjord

(population: 114) was moved to Aasgaard. The spelling was later changed to Åsskard. On 1 January 1965, Åsskard was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Surnadal
to the south. Before the merger, Åsskard had a population of 1,014.
