It was previously known as Russel C. Gordon Elementary School, offering both French and English elementary classes. In 2002 it was recognized by the government of Canada as a federal Heritage Building "because of its historical associations, architectural qualities and its environmental significance." It was designed by the Toronto firm of Craig and Madill and was completed in 1962. Between 2003 and 2007 there was a series of upgrades and additions including a new gymnasium and an information technology lab. The information technology lab received upgrades in early 2009. In May 2011, the school hosted the Acadian Games of that year.
