Athenian democracy had two unique features. Government offices were filled by the drawing of lots, and the eligibility of all male citizens to speak and vote in the Assembly.

Oddly enough, slavery was present at the formation of another democracy (i.e. the U.S.). Not sure if that is a coincidence.
