Irreducible complexity is an argument used by advocates of intelligent design. This argument states that natural selection alone could not produce the complexity now evident in the natural world.

Critics of this argument counter that it implies that the necesary components of a mechanism have always been necessary, and could not have been added later on.

It's an argumant from ignorance: just because someone doesn't know how something happened is no reason to assume supernatural agency.
