Star Trek: First Contact (Paramount Pictures, 1996) is the eighth feature film based on the popular Star Trek science fiction television series. In it, the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation again encounter their adversaries, the Borg, and this time attempt to prevent the Borg from changing history by conquering the Earth of the 21st century through the use of time travel. The film is from a script by Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore, with music composed by Jerry Goldsmith.
Resistance is Futile.
- Directed by Jonathan Frakes. Written by Rick Berman, Brannon Braga, and Ronald D. Moore.
Jean-Luc Picard
- [as Locutus, in a nightmare] Resistance is futile.
- [explaining 24th-century economics to 21st-century Lily Sloane.] The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves, and the rest of humanity. Actually, we're rather like yourself and Dr. Cochrane.
- Reports of my assimilation are greatly exaggerated.
Data
- [After Captain Picard of the Enterprise asks if anyone objects the violation of their orders ]
- Data: I believe I speak for the entire crew, sir, when I say, "To hell with our orders."
- [Lily empties an entire magazine of rounds into Data after he jumps down the silo and lands in front of her.]
- Data: Greetings.
- [Lily faints]
- [After going in the wake of the Borg Sphere's time-travel gate, the Enterprise crew sees a radically different Earth]
- Data: Earth, population nine billion...All Borg.
Zefram Cochrane
- And you people, you're all astronauts, on some kind of star trek.
- I don't wanna be a statue!
Others
- Borg: We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
- Emergency Medical Hologram: I'm a doctor, not a doorstop.
Dialogue
- William Riker: We finished our first sensor sweep of the Neutral Zone.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Oh, fascinating. 20 particles of space dust per cubic meter, 52 ultraviolet radiation spikes, and a Class 2 comet. (sarcastically) Well, this is certainly worthy of our attention.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Lieutenant Hawk, set a course for Earth. Maximum warp.
- Sean Hawk: Aye, sir.
- Jean-Luc Picard: [addressing the bridge crew] I'm about to commit a direct violation of our orders. Any of you who wish to object should do so now. It will be noted in my log.
- Data: Captain, I believe I speak for everyone here, sir, when I say… to Hell with our orders.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Red alert. All hands to battle stations. Engage.
- Defiant Helmsman: Main power's off-line. We've lost shields. Our weapons are gone.
- Worf: Perhaps today is a good day to die. Prepare for ramming speed!
- Defiant Helmsman: Sir, there's another starship coming in! It's the Enterprise!
- Beverly Crusher: I have a patient here who insists on coming to the bridge.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Welcome aboard the Enterprise-E, Mr. Worf.
- Worf: Thank you, sir. The Defiant?.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Adrift, but salvageable.
- William Riker: Tough little ship.
- Worf: [incredulous] Little?
- Jean-Luc Picard: Mr. Worf, we could use some help at Tactical.
- [when Worf takes control of Tactical, Riker approaches him]
- William Riker: You do remember how to fire phasers?
- [as he sees Worf indignant, he walks away smiling]
- Deanna Troi: Time line?! This is no time to argue about time! We don't have the time. What was I saying?
- William Riker: You're drunk.
- Deanna Troi: I am not.
- William Riker: [laughs] Yes, you are.
- Deanna Troi: [very drunk] Look, he wouldn't even talk to me unless I had a drink with him. And then, it took three shots of something called tequila just to find out he was the one we're looking for. And I spent the last 20 minutes trying to keep his hands off me. So don't go criticizing my counselling technique.
- William Riker: [laughs] Sorry.
- Deanna Troi: It's a primitive culture. I'm just trying to blend in.
- William Riker: You're blended all right.
- Deanna Troi: If you're looking for my professional opinion as ship's counsellor: he's nuts.
- William Riker: I'll be sure to note that in my log.
- (Deanna passes out)
- [While Picard and Data are conducting an assault team in order to re-take the Enterprise-E from the Borg]
- Data: Captain, I believe I am feeling... anxiety. It is an intriguing sensation. A most distracting --
- Jean-Luc Picard: [interrupting Data] Data, I'm sure it's a fascinating experience, but perhaps you should deactivate your emotion chip for now.
- Data: Excellent idea [makes a move with his head, eliciting a beep] Done, sir.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Data, there are times when I envy you.
- Data: Your efforts to break the encryption codes will not be successful. Nor will your attempts to assimilate me into your collective.
- Borg Queen: Brave words. I've heard them before from thousands of species across thousands of worlds since long before you were created. But now, they are all Borg.
- Data: I am unlike any lifeform you have encountered before. The codes stored in my neural-net cannot be forcibly removed.
- Borg Queen: You are an imperfect being, created by an imperfect being. Finding your weakness is only a matter of time.
- Zefram Cochrane: Let me just make sure that I understand you correctly, Commander. A group of cybernetic creatures from the future have traveled back through time to enslave the human race... and you're here to stop them?
- William Riker: That's right.
- Zefram Cochrane: Hot damn! You people are heroic.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Good, they haven't broken the encryption codes yet.
- Lily Sloane: Who? Those bionic zombies you told me about, the--
- Jean-Luc Picard: Borg.
- Lily Sloane: Borg? Sounds Swedish.
- . . .
- Liliy Sloane: [after seeing Borg drones for the first time] Definitely not Swedish.
- Zefram Cochrane: I gotta take a leak.
- Geordi La Forge: Leak? I'm not detecting any leaks.
- Zefram Cochrane: Don't you people from the 24th century ever pee?
- Geordi La Forge: Oh, leak! Heh. That's pretty funny.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Mr. Worf, do you remember your zero-G combat training?
- Worf: I remember it made me sick to my stomach. [crestfallen] What are you suggesting?
- Jean-Luc Picard: I think it's time that we took a little stroll.
- Borg Queen: Do you always talk this much?
- Data: Not always, but often.
- Zefram Cochrane: [drunk] I'm not going back! I don't wanna be a statue! [starts to run to woods]
- William Riker: We don't have time for this! [pulls out his phaser and stuns Cochrane] [To Geordi] You told him about the statue?!
- Worf: Assimilate this.
- Zefram Cochrane: You don't have a moon in the 24th century?
- William Riker: Sure we do. Just looks a lot different. There are 50 million people living on the moon in my time. You can see Tycho City, New Berlin... even Lake Armstrong on a day like this.
- William Riker: Someone once said, "Don't try to be a great man. Just be a man, and let history make its own judgements."
- Zefram Cochrane: That's rhetorical nonsense. Who said that?
- William Riker: (smiling) You did. Ten years from now.
- Worf: With all due respect, sir, I believe you are allowing your experience with the Borg to influence your judgement.
- Jean-Luc Picard: You're afraid. You want to destroy the ship and run away. You coward.
- Beverly Crusher: Jean-Luc!
- Worf: If you were any other man, I would kill you where you stand.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Get off my bridge!
- Lily Sloane: Oh, excuse me! I didn't mean to interrupt your little quest! Captain Ahab has to go hunt his whale.
- Jean-Luc Picard: What did you say?
- Lily Sloane: What? You don't have books in the 24th century?
- Jean-Luc Picard: This is not about revenge!
- Lily Sloane: Liar!
- Jean-Luc Picard: This is about saving the future of humanity!
- Lily Sloane: JEAN-LUC, BLOW UP THE DAMN SHIP!
- Jean-Luc Picard: NO! NOOOOOOOOO!!! [smashes a display case in anger]
- [Both pause, shocked]
- Jean-Luc Picard: I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We've made too many compromises already - too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, and no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!
- Lily Sloane: [looking at the broken remains of the Enterprise-D model] You broke your little ships. [pause] See you around, Ahab.
- Jean-Luc Picard: [softly, to himself] "And he piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the rage and hate felt by his whole race. If his chest had been a cannon he would have shot his heart upon it."
- Lily Sloane: What?
- Jean-Luc Picard: Moby Dick.
- Lily Sloane: Actually, I never read it.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Ahab spent years hunting the white whale that crippled him; but in the end, it destroyed him and his ship.
- Lily Sloane: I guess he didn't know when to quit.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Begin auto-destruct sequence, authorization Picard-four-seven-alpha-tango.
- Beverly Crusher: Computer, Commander Beverly Crusher. Confirm auto-destruct sequence, authorization Crusher-two-two-beta-Charlie.
- Worf: Computer, Lieutenant Commander Worf. Confirm auto-destruct sequence. Authorization Worf-three-seven-gamma-echo.
- Computer: Command authorization accepted. Awaiting final code to begin auto-destruct sequence.
- Jean-Luc Picard: This is Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Destruct sequence alpha-one, 15 minutes, silent countdown. Enable.
- Computer: Self-destruct in 15 minutes. There will be no further audio warnings.
- Beverly Crusher: So much for the Enterprise E.
- Jean-Luc Picard: We barely knew her.
- Dr. Beverly Crusher: You think they'll build another one?
- Jean-Luc Picard: Plenty of letters left in the alphabet.
- William Riker: Everybody ready to make some history?
- Geordi LaForge: Always am.
- Zefram Cochrane: I think I forgot something.
- William Riker: What?
- Zefram Cochrane: I don't know, probably nothing.
- Deanna Troi: Begin ignition sequence.
- Zefram Cochrane: Oh God, now I remember!
- Geordi LaForge: What?
- Zefram Cochrane: Where is it?
- Geordi LaForge: What?!
- Zefram Cochrane: We can't lift off without it.
- William Riker: Geordi, we've got to abort!
- Zefram Cochrane: No, no, wait I've found it.
- [Troi continues countdown]
- Zefram Cochrane: Let's rock 'n' roll!
- [plugs a small disc into a slot in the Phoenix's control panel]
- Deanna Troi: Two…one…ze-AAH! ["Magic Carpet Ride" begins blaring through everyone's headsets and the Phoenix lifts off]
- Borg Queen: Destroy them.
- [Data pauses, then presses a button on a control panel, firing three quantum torpedoes at the Phoenix]
- Borg Queen: Watch your future's end.
- [suspense builds as the torpedoes move towards the Phoenix, but the torpedoes just miss the small warp ship]
- Borg Queen: [realizing that Data has betrayed her] DATA!
- Data: [in an angry tone] Resistance is futile! [breaks open the coolant conduit on the warp core and coolant starts to flood the room]
- Data: She brought me closer to humanity than I ever thought possible, and for a time...I was tempted by her offer.
- Jean-Luc Picard: How long a time?
- Data: Zero point six eight seconds, sir. For an android, that is nearly an eternity.
- [The Vulcans have landed to meet Cochrane.]
- Vulcan: Live long and prosper.
- Zefram Cochrane: Thanks.
- Data: Helm standing by.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Mr. Data, lay in a course for the 24th century. I suspect our future is there waiting for us.
- Data: Course laid in, sir.
- Jean-Luc Picard: Make it so.
- [last lines]
