The ship was torpedoed on February 5, 1917, and most of the survivors were rescued by the destroyer HMS Pigeon

on May 5, 1918. Finally the unit was shipped to France on the August 16, 1918. In France it trained as a pursuit squadron, but was reassigned to the bomber role evidently when the new commander took over. Just before its first scheduled combat mission the war ended and the unit was shipped home on May 31, 1919 on the SS St. Louis (1894). The squadron was broken up at Garden City.
