Encyclopedia
168th Street was a station on the demolished section of the BMT Jamaica Line
. It had 2 tracks and 1 island platform
This station was built as part of the Dual Contracts. It opened December 12, 1916, seventeen years after the closing of Canal Street Station
along the Atlantic Avenue Rapid Transit line, and closed on September 10, 1977. The next stop to the south was 160th Street
. It was closed in anticipation of the Archer Avenue Subway, and due to political pressure in the area.
Unlike 160th Street and Sutphin Boulevard stations which were demolished in 1979, one building that was part of the station still remains standing on the southeast corner of 165th Street and Jamaica Avenue. It is now a block of local storefronts, and the tower from the station can still be seen today.
