The 17th Field Artillery Brigade activated again at Fort Sill
January 1943. During World War II
the 17th Field Artillery Brigade participated in Normandy
, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
The 17th Field Artillery deployed to Iraq
in 2003 and again in 2005. In 2007 the 17th Field Artillery Brigade moved to Fort Lewis
, Washington.
In 2005 Bravo Battery of the 5th Battalion 3rd Field Artillery deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation: Iraqi Freedom. Before this deployment the Battalion was converged into one battery and were cross trained as HET (Heavy Equipment Transporter) operators. While on deployment the unit completed several successful missions in and out of Iraq and transported numerous types and amounts of equipment for units leaving and coming into the country. The deployment led to no loss of life to the unit and only a small number of injuries.
The 17th Fires Brigade deployed to the Basra
Province in the summer of 2009.
The 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment [part of 17th Fires Brigade] deployed in late 2009 as a "Route Clearance Patrol" supporting various Engineer Battalions in Northern and Southern Afghanistan, they are currently scheduled to redeploy back to Fort Lewis late 2010.
