On the point of elimination, the Giants fought back. In the bottom of the ninth the Giants tied the game 3–3 with two runs and then won it with a run in the tenth when Larry Doyle scored on a sacrifice fly. Home plate umpire Bill Klem later said that Doyle had missed home plate when he came sliding in; none of the Athletics noticed the omission, however, and, this being an appeal play, Klem was compelled to let the run stand.
