final since the Football League
's 2004 rebranding, the 21st play-off final in all at the third level of English football, and the first of these matches to take place at the rebuilt Wembley. The match determined the third and final team to gain promotion
from League One
to the Championship

, who had finished fifth. The teams reached the final by defeating Oldham Athletic
and Nottingham Forest
respectively in the two-legged semi-finals. Robbie Williams and Keigan Parker
scored the goals that gave Blackpool a 2–0 victory in the final.
