On August 1, the first two players to qualify for the Championships were Justine Henin from Belgium and Jelena Janković
from Serbia

After the draw in singles had been determined, the next two players who would be accepted into the Sony Ericsson Championships, based on total WTA Tour Ranking points in 2007, became the alternates. The alternates were only in singles, and they were required to be in Madrid
