season. The match determined the third and final team to gain promotion
from the Championship
to the Premier League, and was contested by Sheffield United
, who finished third during the league season, and Burnley
, who finished fifth. The teams reached the final by defeating Preston North End
and Reading
respectively in the two-legged semi-finals. Burnley won the match 1–0, Wade Elliott
scoring the only goal of the game.
