rejoined the Stingrays for his fifth consecutive season and his third as captain. Also re-signing with the Stingrays for his fifth season was forward Trent Campbell. Veteran enforcer and fan favorite Nate Kiser
was not offered a contract for the season and announced his retirement from professional hockey. The Stingrays inducted him into the team's Hall of Fame on the opening night of the season.
The season opened on October 14, 2011 with a 4–3 overtime victory at home against the Reading Royals
. The Stingrays met their in-state rivals—the Greenville Road Warriors
—in two pre-season contests on October 7 and 8, falling to the Road Warriors in a shootout in Greenville and in regulation play in North Charleston.

. Peverley skated with the Stingrays during the 2004–05 season, scoring 30 goals and 28 assists in 69 regular season games as well as 2 goals and 2 assists in 4 playoff contests. He played with the Nashville Predators
and the Atlanta Thrashers
prior to being traded to the Bruins during the 2010–11 NHL season.

and Josh Godfrey
—both of whom played for the Stingrays during the 2010–11 season—were not given qualifying offers by the Washington Capitals

The team announced on July 7 that three members of the organization would attend the Washington Capitals rookie development camp. The group included team equipment manager John Williams, forward Dmitri Kugryshev
, and defenseman Dustin Stevenson. Kugryshev dressed for three games with the Stingrays during the 2010–11 season, then spent the majority of the season with the Hershey Bears. Stevenson played in 63 games with the Stingrays for the 2010–11 season, scoring three goals and nine assists for 12 points. Additionally, it was released that former Stingrays forward Rob Ricci would not be returning to the team for the 2011–12 season, having signed with the Odense Bulldogs

On July 14, the Stingrays announced that their affiliation with the Washington Capitals had been renewed for the 2011–12 season. The same day, Capitals' officials announced that rookie goaltender Philipp Grubauer would be expected to spend the majority of the 2011–12 season with the Stingrays. Grubauer was the Capitals' 4th-round draft pick in the 2010 NHL draft
and won the Memorial Cup
and the OHL
championship in 2010 with the Windsor Spitfires
. He played for the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs
for the 2010–11 season, finishing with a .903 save percentage and two shutouts.
The team announced on July 21 that head coach Cail MacLean
would not be returning to the Stingrays for the 2011–12 season, having accepted the assistant coaching position with the AHL's Abbotsford Heat

served as Abbotsford's assistant coach during the 2009–10 season. The next week, assistant coach Spencer Carbery

announced that they had signed former Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford
for the 2011–12 season. Ford played for the Stingrays from 2009–11, playing in 50 regular season games with 1316 saves and 136 goals against for a 2.77 GAA and a 0.906 save percentage. He recorded three shutouts in his time with the Stingrays.
returned to the Stingrays for his fifth consecutive season. Scherer first joined the team for the 2007–08 season and has recorded 107 combined points in 247 regular season games and 6 assists in 45 playoff games during his tenure. He was named the team's seventh captain during the 2009–10 season.
On August 11, Brock McBride—who had been extended a qualifying offer by the Stingrays in July—signed with the Belfast Giants

's Elite Ice Hockey League
. The next day, the Stingrays announced their second and third signings with rookie forwards Sean Dolan and Chase Langeraap. Dolan and Langeraap both joined the team at the conclusion of the previous season and made appearances in the playoffs. Forward Joe Cucci, who also skated briefly with the Stingrays at the end of the 2010–11 season, signed with the Reading Royals
on August 17.
The first outside free agent acquired by the Stingrays for the upcoming season was forward Matt Pope
, whose signing was announced on August 19. Pope joined the team from the AHL's San Antonio Rampage
, with whom he skated for 55 games in which he earned 4 goals and 7 assists during the 2010–11 season. Pope previously played in the ECHL with the Bakersfield Condors
, with whom he turned pro in 2008. He was selected as a starter for the 2009 ECHL All-Star Game
and was named to the 2009 ECHL All-Rookie Team.
The AHL's Binghamton Senators
announced on August 23 that they had signed former Stingrays defenseman Josh Godfrey. Godfrey, who skated with the Stingrays from 2008 to 2011, represented the team at the 2011 ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition, where he set the league record for hardest shot at 102.7 miles per hour (45.9 m/s). The next week, defenseman Dylan Yeo
, who skated with the Stingrays from 2009 to 2011, signed with the Ontario Reign
. The same day, the Stingrays re-signed rookie defenseman Nick Tabisz. Tabisz appeared in three games with the Stingrays the previous season, scoring his first professional goal and tallying one assist.
. Tarkir skated with the team from 2008–10 and was part of the 2009 Kelly Cup championship team. He was named a starter for the American Conference team for the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game. Tarkir spent the 2010–11 season with the Hannover Indians of the 2nd.Bundesliga

The team announced its pre-season schedule on September 6, comprising a home-and-home series versus the Stingrays' in-state rivals, the Greenville Road Warriors
. The first game is scheduled to take place at the Bi-Lo Center
on October 7, with the following game at the Carolina Ice Palace (the Stingrays' practice facility) on October 8.
Derek Keller, who received a qualifying offer from the Stingrays in July, re-signed with the team on September 9. The defenseman joined the Stingrays at the end of the 2009–10 season and spent the majority of the 2010–11 season out with an injury. Keller scored 2 goals and 12 assists in 29 games with the team during the previous season. One week later, the Stingrays re-signed forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien. O'Brien skated with the Stingrays for every season since 2007–08 except one (2009–10) when he played for the 2nd.Bundesliga's Fischtown Pinguins
. He was a member of the 2009 Kelly Cup
championship team, scoring 6 goals and 13 assists in 23 games during the playoffs.
On September 17, former Stingrays forward Tommy Goebel signed with Aquile FVG
of Italy's Serie A
. Goebel skated with the Stingrays for the majority of the 2010–11 season and accrued 52 points in combined goals and assists in regular season play. The next week, the team announced that former professional ice hockey player and Ohio State University
assistant hockey coach J.B. Bittner had been named the Stingrays' new assistant coach. Bittner spent three seasons at Ohio State as assistant coach following a three-year professional career in which he saw time in both the ECHL
and the AHL
. That week also saw former Stingrays forward Ryan Del Monte
signing with the Kalamazoo Wings

on September 22. The next day, the Stingrays announced that they had re-signed forward Trent Campbell and signed forwards Jerry Pollastrone and Vyacheslav Trukhno
. Campbell, who has skated with the Stingrays since 2007, tied for the team's highest plus/minus rating (+14) the previous season. Pollastrone joined the team from the Las Vegas Wranglers
, with whom he spent the past two seasons, while Trukhno came to the Stingrays from the Bakersfield Condors
after skating with the Springfield Falcons
from 2007–10 and spending a short stint with the Peoria Rivermen
under former Stingrays head coach Jared Bednar
. Trukhno had signed with the KHL Medveščak of the Austrian Hockey League
on September 22, leaving the Stingrays with his ECHL rights.
The Stingrays' South Division rival Gwinnett Gladiators
signed former forward Nikita Kashirsky on September 28. Kashirsky, a member of the 2009 Kelly Cup championship team, split his time between the Stingrays and the AHL over the previous three seasons. Last season, he netted 26 points in combined goals and assists in 34 games with the Stingrays as well as 2 goals in 14 games with their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears
. The Stingrays announced the next day that they had signed defenseman Johann Kroll and forward James McEwan. Kroll—who first joined the Stingrays in 2008—came to the team as an unrestricted free agent from the Hershey Bears
following a season split between Hershey and South Carolina, while McEwan signed on after two seasons with the Ontario Reign

On September 30, the Utah Grizzlies
released their training camp roster, which included former Stingrays goaltender Shane Owen. Owen joined the Stingrays at the end of the previous season and was the last of those players given qualifying offers to sign with a team.

On October 2, the team announced their plan to induct fan favorite and former defenseman Nate Kiser
into the Stingrays Hall of Fame on the opening night of the season (October 14). Kiser, a seven-year veteran who joined the team in 2004, finished his career with the Stingrays as the team's all-time penalty minutes leader (1,131 PIM) and with the third-most games played (412). He was selected by the Phoenix Coyotes
as a fifth-round draft pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft
and turned pro with the ECHL's Dayton Bombers
, for whom he skated during the 2003–04 season. Kiser also played short stints in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch
, Portland Pirates
and Albany River Rats
. The next day, Kiser revealed that he had not been offered a contract for the upcoming season and announced his retirement from professional hockey.
That same day, the Stingrays made their first trade of the season, acquiring the rights to forward Chris Higgins from the Las Vegas Wranglers
in exchange for future considerations. Higgins scored 16 total points in 21 regular season games with the Wranglers and 20 combined points in 21 games with AS Renon of Italy's Serie A
during the previous season.
