, Canada's national championship trophy. The tournament is organized in a knockout format with two-legged ties in both the semifinals and final, with the away goals rule in place.

MLS Cup

Following the 2012 season, the top five clubs in each conference will qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs postseason tournament. Unlike the 2011 playoffs, there will be no possibility of a "crossover", in which a team from one conference could potentially play in the bracket of the other conference.

The top three clubs in each conference will automatically qualify for the conference semifinals. The other places in the conference semifinals will be filled by the winners of single matches between each conference's number 4 and 5 seeds, hosted by the number 4 seed. Each winner will face its conference's top seed in the semifinals. As in 2011, the semifinals will be two-legged matches decided on aggregate goals. For 2012, the conference finals will change from single matches to two-legged.

The cup final will be at the home field of the team with more regular season points.
