The 2012 World Championship of Ski Mountaineering will be the second World Championship of Ski Mountaineering sanctioned by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF), successor organization of the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions
(ISMC). The competition will be held in the region around Schladming

. The 2012 championships will be the first ones, which are not held in the Western Alps or in the Pyrenees

in due to the good organizations and realizations of the Dachstein Xtreme races by the national ski mountaineering organization ASKIMO, as well as in consequence of the Austrian national squad's successes in international competitions.
