The 268. Infanterie-Division (268th Infantry Division) was a division of the Heer
(German Army) during the Second World War.
The division was raised in August 1939, as part of the fourth mobilisation wave, commanded by Erich Straube
.
It was assigned to XXIV Korps of 1 Armee, part of Army Group C
along the French frontier in September, and was moved to XII Korps in June 1940. After the fall of France, in August, it was transferred to Poland as part of XXXXIV Korps (4 Armee, Army Group B
). After being briefly assigned to XXXV Korps in May 1941, it was assigned to VII Korps of Army Group Centre
for Operation Barbarossa
in June, seeing action against Soviet forces in the Battle of Bialystok–Minsk.
In August it was assigned to XXXXIV Korps (part of Armeegruppe Guderian), fighting around Smolensk
, and the following month was reassigned to XX Korps. It fought with XX Korps through the early phases of the Battle of Moscow
, and was withdrawn to reserve near Vyazma
in November 1941. In December it was assigned to XXIV Korps in 2 Panzerarmee, and in January 1942 to XIII Korps in 4 Armee. On 6 January, Heinz Greiner
took over as divisional commander.
In February 1942 it was assigned to XII Korps, with which it served until August 1943. In September 1943 it was reduced to a kampfgruppe
in heavy fighting around Bryansk
, and was disbanded in November 1943, with the remnants transferred to the 36. Infanterie-Division.
The division was a standard triangular division
with three infantry regiments (the 468th, 488th and 499th), an artillery regiment (the 268th), and antitank, reconnaissance, pioneer and support battalions.
