When activated, the wing assumed the resources (Manpower, Equipment, Weapons, & Facilities) of 4158th Combat Support Group, which was established on 1 July 1960. Throughout its existence it was in provisional status, controlled by Strategic Air Command

The wing provided host station support functions primarily for SAC wing and support elements deployed to Alaska during REFLEX deployments from United States bases. Its major subordinate unit was the 73d Munitions Maintenance Squadron.

It was inactivated in 1966 when SAC moved out of Elmendorf and phased out operations in Alaska.
