. Radio 5 first went on the air on October 13, 1975 after Mozambique gained its independence. Radio 5 was established with 8 medium wave transmitters, catering for the pop music audience. The name indicated the SABC's 5th radio channel at that time.

Re-branded 5FM in 1992 , the current logo is a red 5 and superscripted FM within a circle and the words "The Power of" inscribed along the upper periphery of the circle. Music is the heart of 5FM's format, supported by news, sports and traffic catering to a wide range of tastes for a youthful market.

5FM IN 2011

5FM today is the entertainment powerhouse for youthful South Africans, offering the most popular contemporary music and entertainment. As a national Top 40 hit music radio station, 5FM is on the pulse of local and global music and content trends; thereby offering audiences access to, and an opportunity to be part of, the energy and dynamism of a fast changing youthful community.

The irreverent but stylish brand personality is augmented by a line-up of on-air talent like no other in South Africa and is the primary source of music & lifestyle trends for a nation of cool and trendy young adults. 5FM = (Music) 5 [i.e. to the Power of 5]!

The station has received many awards and accolades, which bear testimony to its talented DJs and skilful programming. Most recently, 5FM’s Rob Vember and 5FM’s DJ Fresh won best daytime presenter and best night time presenter respectively at the 2011 MTN Radio Awards. 5FM was voted “Coolest radio station” for the sixth year in a row in the Sunday Times’ Generation Next awards 2011.

CORE AUDIENCE:
The bulk of 5FM’s listeners countrywide are aged between 20 and 24 years old.

TYPICAL LISTENER:
A typical 5FM listener has a cross-genre music taste; is technologically savvy, fashion-forward, lifestyle-enhanced and positive about South Africa's future.

LISTENERSHIP:
RAMS results released on October 2010 reflected that 5FM’s listenership increased to 2 227 000 listeners with an average Monday to Friday figure of 1 016 000 listeners.
