The 88th Infantry Division of the German Army (Wehrmacht) was created in December 1939, as a unit of the 6th wave of army mobilisation. The 6th wave had much wepons and equipment of Czech origin. In May 1940 the division was tranfered to the west and subsiquesly took part in the later balles in france until the end of hostilities. In December 1941 the division was shifted to the southern sector of the eastern front. The 88th was on the defensive for the next year with 9th Army, and in January 1944 was badly battered by Russian offensives. In February 1944 the 88th division was encircled with other German units near Cherkassy, and was virtually destroyed.

Combat history

The division took part in the opening stages of Plan Yellow, , but after a short advance was again on the defensive
