and the voice of the Smokey the Genie is played by Jim Backus
in one of his first professional roles. The cartoon is a takeoff of the story of Aladdin's Lamp
. Elements of this short would later be re-used for the Arabian Era in Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters
when he finds Aladdin's Lamp in his hole not knowing what it is at first and calls it junk. He thinks he could use it as an ashtray and starts cleaning it up and out pops Smokey (as Bugs calls him) the Genie
(whom would later appear in Looney Tunes: Marvin Strikes Back!)and announces that he is here and let the bells ring out and feast his eyes on him ("I'm here! I'm here! Let the bells ring out and the banners fly! Feast your eyes on me! It's too good to be true, but I'm here! I'm here!"). Bugs, suspicious of Smokey at first, asks what he wants ("Why, I'm a genie. I live in that lamp. They call me 'Genie with the light brown hare'. Oh, that was a witty one!"). Smokey wants to grant Bugs any wish he wants ("My little, buck-tooth pal, I'll grant you a wish. Anything you want. I got millions".), but when Bugs tries to give a wish, the Genie makes a bunch of excuses ("Oh, no no, they're much too small.", "Oh no, they're too delicate. Too sahns-a-tave!", "Oh, Heavens to Gimbles, no!"). Then, not wanting any of this, he angrily wishes for a carrot ("Now cut that out! That's enough of that stuff! I got a wish coming and I wish for a carrot!"). Bugs opens the lamp lid & tells Smokey to make it two carrots (to see if he is for real; "Poisonally, I think the guy's a phony, but just in case... Hey Smokey, as long as you're down there, make that two carrots!"). Smokey gives him two carrots & Bugs is pleased.
Smokey wants to go back to Baghdad
where he lives ("But I'm going back to my fabulous estate in Baghdad. First class, of course.") and he wants to take Bugs along, so Bugs accepts ("Baghdad? Hmm... I wish I could go to Baghdad...") and he and the Genie in the lamp fly literally with Bugs flying like an "hareplane" as he calls it ("Hey, look fellas, I'm a hare-plane!").
Before coming to Baghdad (here spelled as "Bagdad"), the aerial view also shows two bodies of water named Veronica Lake
and Turhan Bay
), they show various places there including "The Brown Turban", Mad Man Hassan's used magic carpet
lot, and a telephone company that gives Persian to Persian("person-to-person")calls.
Bugs and the Genie in the lamp arrive in Baghdad, but Bugs' flying in the air sputters and conks out and Bugs and the lamp fall into Caliph Hassan Pfeiffer's Palace (built on a GI Loan!), first angering the Caliph ("Eh, what's up, uh, Beaverpuss?"), who then wants the lamp ("Aladdin's Lamp!"). When Bugs says he can't have it (proclaiming, "Eh, correction, doc. Bugs Bunny's lamp!"), the chase starts (after the Caliph threatens Bugs at sword-point, "Just a minute, doc. Let's not start splitting hares!"). When Bugs hides behind a door and ladies shriek, forcing him out of that room, Bugs points out it is a harem ("Er, uh, a harem, I tink!"), which encourages the genie to pop out and take a peek himself ("Oh, that was a harem, alright! I know a harem when I see one!").
When Bugs tries to get Smokey to get him out of the mess he is in ("Eh, looks like I'll need a little help. Hey, Smokey! On deck!"), the Genie is taking a bath ("Oh, fiddle de de dee! Don't I even get a chance to take a bath? Now, don't bother me!"), and when Bugs tries again ("Come on, Smokey! Gimme a hand up here!") the lazy genie is eating dinner ("Oh, Sweet spirits of camphor! Can't a man get any nourishment around here? Now, go away!"). Bugs doesn't like this one bit, and starts hitting the Genie with a stick ("Why, you double-crosser! Come out of there! Come on, come on, come on!") with the Genie hitting back ("Why, you overgrown puff of smoke!"). Bugs quickly tries to escape from the Caliph by taking a magic carpet, rigged with an outboard motor. On the magic carpet
, Bugs tries again with Smokey ("Come on, Smokey. Stop kidding around, I'm in a spot!") but the Genie is kissing a girl genie and the girl genie ducks back into the lamp. The angered genie warns Bugs if he disturbs him once more he'll be beaten to a pulp ("Now you've done it! You made me simply furious! If you disturb me once more, I'll beat you to a pulp!") and ducks back into the lamp after the girl genie.
At this moment, the magic carpet
runs out of gas, making Bugs crash land back into the palace and Caliph Hassan Pfeiffer has the lamp now. When the Caliph tries to get the Genie out of the lamp, in spite of Bugs warning him not to ("You'll be sorry!"), Smokey is very angry (and much larger this time) and true to his earlier warning to Bugs, beats Hassan to a pulp ("Sock 'im, Smokey!") and then he cheers Bugs on his victory ("Three cheers and a tiger for me! I have won!"). To celebrate, he grants Bugs a wish ("Listen, my little buck-tooth pal. I'll celebrate by granting you a wish!"). He whispers to Smokey, then gets a ball which ends up as a puff of smoke when dropped. There we find Bugs, now a Caliph himself, surrounded by a harem of female rabbits & asking, "I wonder what the poor rabbits are doing this season?"
