This road was known as the A14 until the M11 motorway

 was completed and traffic was encouraged to follow the new motorway and the former A604 (now A14 road) instead. Much of former A14 was renumbered as the A1198 at that time to discourage through traffic. Use of the short section of the route from Huntingdon to Alconbury was encouraged and retained the A14 designation for a short time being renumbered as a spur of the A604 (it has subsequently being renumbered as the A14 again along with the rest of the A604).
