North Orbital Road

As the North Orbital Road, it occupied what is now junctions 17 to 19 of the M25, being one of the first sections of the M25 to open. The section of the M25 from junctions 19 to 23, including the busy M1 junction, was the last section to open. Hence the A405, a dual carriageway road, acted as the M25's north-west section until the M25 was completed.

Northbound traffic on the M1 cannot access the M25 at junction 6a, a mile to the north, so M1 traffic has to access junction 6 and use the A405 to reach the M25, and M25 traffic has to use the A405 to reach the M1 south. The road meets the M25 at junction 21a. Joining the M25 anticlockwise here means you cannot access the M1 northbound at junction 21, as the slip road joins the M25 after the slip road from the M25 to the M1 northbound.
