. AIB has an enrollment of almost 1,000 day, evening and online students. The campus features 17 buildings on 20 acres (80,937.2 m²) near downtown Des Moines. Residential, apartment-style housing is available for 520 students. AIB offers 23 Associate of Applied Science

History

American Institute of Business was founded in 1921 by Everett O. Fenton and Ray Hansen. The institution was first located at the Victoria Hotel on Sixth Avenue in Des Moines. In 1935, AIB moved to Tenth Street and Grand Avenue, the heart of the downtown business district. It educated students at that location for 37 years. In 1941, the college was reorganized as a nonprofit. In 1957, Keith Fenton becomes AIB's second president. In 1986, AIB became accredited with the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. In 1998, Keith Fenton retired as president of AIB after 42 years of service. The Administration Building was renamed the Keith Fenton Administration Building. In 1999, Nancy Williams was elected president of AIB after 16 years with the College. In 2000, the college changed its name from American Institute of Business to AIB College of Business to better reflect its mission and purpose.

Education

AIB offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, Court Reporting and Steno Reporting. The college also offers Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) degree programs in the fields of Accounting, Business Administration, Information Technology, Office Administration, Transcription Services, Travel and Tourism, Media Communications, and Voice Captioning. Business Administration degrees are offered in the areas of Leadership, Financial Services, and Sales and Marketing. All Associate degree majors are also available online.

AIB is one of the few institutions in the United States that offers a college degree in Voice Captioning.

AIB is dedicated to its mission of providing quality educational opportunities that prepare students to build careers in business.

The average tuition rate at AIB in 2009 per student was $26000 per year including fees and books. The student to faculty ratio is approximately 18:1. Of the 7 degree programs offered at AIB, 5 of them are eligible for distance education.

Athletics

AIB offers men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball. Student-athletes compete in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. The college is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The AIB Eagles play their basketball home games in the AIB Activities Center – a $5 million facility that can accommodate more than 1,100 people. The facility, built in 1999, features a gymnasium, running track, cardio room and weight room. It also has men’s and women’s locker rooms, a press box, scoreboards and concession areas.

In 2008 the college took a proactive step in student led initiatives and remodeled the lounge and Front Desk area of the primary residence hall Fenton Hall.

Student organizations

  • Adult Students On Campus (ASOC)

The mission of Adult Students on Campus (ASOC) is to enhance the college experience of non-traditional students at AIB. Each quarter ASOC provides opportunities for adult students and their families to connect with each other through social outings. Members of ASOC have many opportunities to learn planning, organizational, and leadership skills through managing the AIB Clothes Closet, conducting fundraising events, and participating in community projects. Membership is FREE to any student who is at least 21 years or older, or married, and/or has children.
  • Alpha Iota International Honorary Business Sorority

Founded at AIB in 1925 by Elsie M. Fenton, Alpha Iota has chapters throughout the United States and has initiated more than 65,000 members. Des Moines has an active chapter and an alumnae chapter. An invitation to join is made on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, leadership potential, and professional demeanor. Alpha Iota women may apply to live in the Alpha Iota Sorority House on campus.
  • Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP)

The mission statement is to give students the opportunity to associate directly with members of the business community.
  • Business Management Association (BMA)

Business Management Association (BMA) is dedicated to the mission of preparing members to pursue careers in business and to developing members who will be assets to the community and society. To fulfill this mission, members perform the management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling when engaging in fundraising, charitable, and social projects and events. BMA offers members unique opportunities to learn, grow, and to experience success in a variety of arenas which prepare members for today's highly competitive business environment. Utilizing a hands-on approach, all activities are designed to help members understand the challenges faced by business managers.
Business Management Association was established in 1981 and is a student chapter of Leadership Network, the Des Moines Chapter of The National Management Association.

Originally known as Administrative Management Society (AMS), BMA dues are a one time fee of $25.00.
  • International Association of Administrative Professionals Student Chapter (IAAP)

IAAP is a not-for-profit professional association with approximately 40,000 members world wide. IAAP has 150 Student Chapters which encompasses almost 2,000 members. The IAAP mission is to be the acknowledged, recognized leader of administrative professionals and to enhance their individual and collective value, image, competence, and influence. IAAP's purpose is to provide information and to set standards of excellence. IAAP's vision is to inspire and equip all administrative professionals to attain excellence.
  • Future Travel Professionals (FTP)

The mission statement is to develop a better understanding of the travel and hospitality industry through networking, guest speakers, and having fun; while together becoming more involved in the organization and our community, gaining experience, responsibility, and leadership skills that will spark enthusiasm for our future careers and lives.
  • Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)

The college chapter of Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) provides students with a better understanding of the accounting profession through direct association with members of the business community. Membership is open to any student interested in accounting and in learning more about this profession. IMA meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:35 in room 313 of the Administration Building.
  • Student Court Reporting Association (SCRA)

SCRA educates members about Realtime Reporting as a profession and provides support and encouragement among fellow reporting students. All Realtime Reporting students may join.
SCRA was organized at AIB in May 1978. The goals and purposes of the organization include having an organization of Realtime Reporting students to supplement the learning and goals of the classroom environment, conducting seminars and clinics in order to broaden the students' knowledge of Realtime Reporting, establishing contacts with working reporters, encourage participation in professional organizations and encourage service to others.
  • Student Government Association (SGA)

We are the main governing body for student involvement on campus. SGA is made of representatives from residents’ hall councils, student organizations, and members of the college community. We also serve as a forum for any student to voice concerns, ideas, questions, or comments. A main goal of SGA is to be an effective liaison between the student body, faculty, and the administration.
  • National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA)

To provide an opportunity for students to further develop their marketing skills and become highly visible as prospects for employment. Students complete a five page marketing plan which they then present at the student competition at the annual national convention.
