with representatives traveling internationally to take orders which are then manufactured in Hong Kong. This model is similar to the one adopted by competitor Raja Fashions in the late 1990s when the large ex-patriot community of Hong Kong shrank in the lead up to the Chinese hand over.

Traveling Tailor

The traveling tailor model, employed by ANS Fashions, attempts to leverage the existing Tailoring infrastructure of Hong Kong while selling to larger world markets. In many ways this is an extension of the new bespoke movement

. One of the key advantages of accessing global markets is bypassing local competition and selling to those markets where demand is high but supply is low. This is something which ANS Fashions has found in New Zealand which has seen increasing customers each visit.

to create a type of mobile store front. Once an order is placed with a representative, the details are emailed to a Hong Kong workshop which fills the order and ships it back to the customer via registered post or courier.

Traveling Tailor model as compared with other Types of Tailoring

The traveling tailor model can be said to be an attempt to combine the best elements of Distance Tailoring and Local Tailoring. Local tailoring has the advantage that clients are able to meet with a tailor personally. This ensures professional measurements can be taken and that tailors are aware of the unique modifications which can be made to better fit the garment to the client. Distance tailoring takes advantage of lower labor costs at the expense of professional measurements and a requirement to choose fabrics from photos rather than swatches

.
The traveling tailor model allows local tailors to take measurements and provide physical access to fabric swatches while still taking advantage of lower labour costs at other stages of the production process. There may not be a net reduction in costs though due to the necessity to account for the transport and accommodation costs of the traveling tailor.
Some Tailors have used their own variation of the Traveling Tailor model in which they have many representatives permanently located in other specific locals acting as resellers.
