Cooking Vinyl is a UK-based independent record company, founded in 1986. Its original orientation was toward contemporary folk music—notably Billy Bragg, and Michelle Shocked's Texas Campfire Tapes, recorded on a Sony Walkman, one of its first releases...

 – records in 1997.

A World Without Dave was released as an EP due to Cooking Vinyl feeling it would cost fans less money to buy than a full length album, thus generating higher sales and gaining a mainstream chart position (it failed).
The album was also the first recorded with bass player Salv and guitarist Steve, each of whom would remain part of Carter until the group's demise.
