The district was abolished in 1996, with its area passing to Aberconwy and Colwyn, shortly afterwards renamed Conwy County Borough. However, some council services are still split into Aberconwy and Colwyn districts such as the registration of births, deaths and marriages.

In 2003, the area of the former district was moved from the preserved county of Gwynedd, to Clwyd
