Bernero signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1999 immediately after his final collegiate game with Armstrong Atlantic State. Tigers' scout Gary York watched Bernero's final game, which ended up running long until almost midnight, with the plan to get Bernero to sign as soon as possible after the game because of the many teams seeking to sign Bernero. York followed Bernerro and the rest of the team to a Denny's restaurant where York realized he had forgotten the contract back at his hotel room. York improvised and wrote the terms of a basic agreement on a napkin which Bernero signed and made his debut for the Detroit Tigers in 2000. Adam recalled "It makes me wonder sometimes if it was valid at all. But I am here now so I don't care." Bernero was a member of the Detroit Tigers until 2003 before being traded in mid-season to the Colorado Rockies, at which point the Tigers had won a single game and lost 12, and Bernero with an ERA of 6.08.
