Born in Liverpool Dickinson played in the Youth and Reserve squads of Tranmere Rovers but despite scoring 5 goals in 14 appearances, he never broke into the senior squad. He started his senior career in the Welsh Premier League with Connah's Quay Nomads F.C., before they changed their name to Gap Connah's Quay F.C. following a club takeover.
