Strachan came through the youth system at Partick Thistle
and played almost 90 matches for the senior side, including some matches in the Scottish Premier League
.
Since leaving Thistle, Strachan has only played in the Scottish Football League
, with such sides as Ross County

and latterly Arbroath
.

He left Partick Thistle by mutual consent in December 2007, ending a near four-year stint with the club. He then joined Ross County
on 2 January 2008.
In July 2009, Strachan went on trial with First Division

. He made his first appearance as a substitute in Austria

After impressing as a trialist, Strachan signed for Arbroath
on 25 February 2011 until the end of the season. After agreeing to sign again at the Third Division champions, he went on holiday and then when he came back he refused to sign.
He has since played a couple of trial matches for Junior
side Clydebank
. He later signed a short-term deal with the Bankies.
