A number of schools are located in the suburb;

• Kotara High School, part of the KLN School Collegiate and one of the three major high schools in the Newcastle area, was established in 1968 as a public high school catering for years 7 to 12, and presently has over 1,000 enrolled students. It contains a Hearing Support Unit for hearing-impaired students and a multi-purpose centre.
• St Pius X High School, first established in 1957 as a Catholic boys' school, became a co-educational junior high school (years 7 to 10) in 1983, absorbing the campus of St Anne's College, a girls' school established in 1966, in the process.
