On 26 January 2010, it was confirmed that both Aer Lingus and Aer Arann would launch a new franchise agreement. On that same date, new routes from Dublin to Doncaster-Sheffield
and Durham Tees Valley
were announced by Aer Lingus Regional, in addition to a new route from Cork to Glasgow
.
It was also decided that previous Aer Arann routes to Cork would all be transferred to Aer Lingus Regional. Aer Arann services to Blackpool and Cardiff from Dublin would be transferred to Aer Lingus Regional also.
Though Aer Arann and Aer Lingus co-founded Aer Lingus Regional, Aer Arann operate all flights and will manage those flights with Aer Arann flight crew onboard. All aircraft are painted in Aer Lingus livery, and both airlines anticipate new routes being announced as the new subsidiary between the two airlines grows.
The agreement provides Aer Lingus passengers with increased services, in particular to the UK, a greater choice of frequency on services to regional UK markets and improved connectivity to/from Aer Lingus' transatlantic network.
Aer Lingus Regional examined the possibility of launching new routes from Shannon
to Birmingham and Manchester, with a view to other UK routes as well as domestic routes. It was subsequently announced on 31 May 2010 that Aer Lingus Regional would begin new services from Shannon to Birmingham, Bristol
, Glasgow-International
and Manchester from 1 July of that year. In addition, a new service from Shannon to Edinburgh
started on 27 March 2011.
The airline will expand services at its Cork hub
from 31 October 2010, with a second based aircraft and new destinations to Birmingham and Manchester. Flights to Birmingham and Manchester will operate twice daily each day of the week, this will now see twice daily flights on both routes from Cork for the first time, allowing business travellers the option of a day return, and increased choice for leisure passengers.
