API identified very closely with the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) and focused its activities on the war in Sudan organising several solidarity visits to the liberated areas in the Southern parts of the country, arranging speaking engagements for senior SPLM/A leaders, publicing SPLM/A material and mobilising humanitarian assistance for youth in the war affected areas. was the first patron of API by virtue of his role as tutor and mentor to the founding members of REMNA.

API members went to become very active in a number of African countries. Two of its founding members are now serving in the General Headquarters of the SPLA. Others are active in the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS). Some serve in the UN while others are working for international aid agencies.
