Afro prog
Encyclopedia
Afro prog is a term that has been used to describe music of the late 1960s and 1970s that has both a distinct African cultural flavour as well as a progressive rock
approach.
In the late 1960s, artists around the world were experimenting with combining rock music
in new ways with established styles of music like classical, jazz
and Afro-Cuban
. Musicians of African heritage were also combining African and African-American styles with rock
in a progressive fashion. This trend reached its peak in the early 1970s and then faded from mainstream attention.
Bands that have been described as Afro prog include Assagai
, Mandrill
and Osibisa
. These bands were active in the early 1970s, the heyday of progressive rock music.
In the period around 1979-1981, guitarist Robert Fripp
, leader of King Crimson
, recorded guitar tracks which could be described as afro-prog, especially the title track from the album Discipline
, and the introductory riff of I Zimbra
from the Talking Heads
new-wave/art-rock classic Fear of Music
. An arguably afro-prog approach to guitar can be heard on some songs of the contemporary indie/art-rock band Dirty Projectors
and the art rock
outfit Reverse X Rays.
In 2005, Afroprog saw a resurrection in the San Francisco Bay Area
with the band The Flux.
