At eighteen years old, he enlisted for six years to fight alongside the Patriots in 1777. For four years he was a messenger and orderly who catered to the sick and wounded. The last two years he worked with doctors and received an education to perform operations, amputations of body parts and fix broken bones. When the war was over, he returned to Massachusetts and worked as a doctor.
