. The population was 4,523 at the 2000 census. Ahoskie is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks
region. Its nickname is "The Only One" because no other town in the world is known by the same name. The origin of the word Ahoskie, which was originally spelled "Ahotsky," came from the Wyanoke Indians who entered the Hertford County area at the beginning of European settlement.

living together, 23.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. Individual households madeup 32.9% of all households and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
The population ages were distributed with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 75.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 67.7 males.
