The Air Force Safety Center (AFSC) attempts to prevent mishaps and preserve combat readiness by developing, implementing, executing, and evaluating Air Force aviation, ground, weapons, nuclear surety, space, and system programs. It conducts research to promote safety and awareness and mishap prevention. It oversees mishap investigations, evaluates corrective actions, and ensures implementation. It develops and directs safety and operational risk management
education. It publishes Wingman magazine in an effort to save lives and protect national assets.
At some facilities, up to two thirds of all required spot inspections are not conducted and of the safety mishaps that do occur, eleven percent are not reported to the AFSC.
