History

Alden Park apartments were begun in 1908 and built in the Jacobean Revival style. The complex has three sets of towers; The Manor, The Kenilworth and The Cambridge buildings. Designed by Edwyn Rorke and developed by Lawrence Jones, it was built in a park-like setting on thirty-eight acres that were the Justus C. Strawbridge estate. It was the first co-operative apartment complex in Philadelphia, although Alden Park apartments are now rental buildings. It is located next to and overlooking the Wissahickon Valley section of Fairmount Park

The buildings were once entirely surrounded by lawns, gardens and large neighboring estates, but is now in a more urban setting dominated by multi-story apartment houses, busy streets and parked cars. The complex features a unique swimming pool which is lined with Mercer tiles and has a retractable roof.

The complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places

in 1980 and to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 1981. The complex was substantially renovated by Leclere Associates Architects from 2003-2006. Some photos of the renovation can be seen at Dennis Cudd Studios, LLC who was a project manager of the renovation.
