Landry served as president of the New Brunswick Liberal Association
and became a trusted advisor, along with her husband, to Frank McKenna
upon his election as leader of the party
in 1985. She was elected to the legislature
in 1987
and served as deputy premier, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, and interim Minister of Fisheries
under Premier

. She was the key point person for McKenna on the Meech Lake Accord
and served as New Brunswick president of the Council for Canadian Unity. She was defeated in the 1991 election
