Nateq-Nouri himself told Aljazeerah that his remarks about the history of the region had been misunderstood and that his comment was not relevant to today's Iran-Bahrain relationship, IRNA reported. Bahrain was a part of Iran until it was recognized by Iran and the United Kingdom as a separate state after a referendum conducted by the United Nations in 1971.
