future.
In Maitland's first full season in charge at Alloa
, the club finished in seventh place which was followed by a clear out of 10 players with Allan quoted as saying "I want this club to be looking up the way and looking to challenge at the right end of the division next season, to do that there needs to be radical surgery and by releasing these players tonight it creates space for other players to come in..." Maitland has started to build his squad for the 2007-2008 season with the addition of nine new players including experienced defender Derek Fleming
and second time Alloa midfielder Brown Ferguson
.
He is renowned for his cliched use of shouting the players first name and his surname when bellowing praise to his players from the touchline- for example "Well done Andy Scott" "Well played Gary Carroll" "Thats good work Greig Spence" etc. It is believed Maitland adopted this as a tribute to local Sunday league player Greig McKay, known for saying "Well done John France" on each occasion his central defensive partner carries out a manoeuvre that he deems worthy of receiving praise.
He used to work in a bank before becoming a manager.
Maitland was replaced at Alloa Athletic temporarily by senior players Scott Walker and Brown Ferguson in May 2011 following the club's failure to avoid the relegation playoffs. The club subsequently dropped into Scottish division 3 after losing the playoffs to Annan Athletic. A permanent replacement for Maitland followed in the form of Paul Hartley.
