Allerton TMD

Allerton TMD is a railway traction maintenance depot
situated in Liverpool
. The depot is opposite Liverpool South Parkway
and is visible to the north on the way to Hunts Cross
. The depot is now owned and soon to be operated by Northern Rail
, but used to be owned by EWS. The depot code is now AN but, in steam days, the shed code was 8J.
In 2011, It was announced that Northern Rail
had purchased the now closed Allerton TMD With the intention of refurbishing and reopening the depot for servicing of its Class 156
Fleet. In the future, it will also be the home for the cascaded Class 319
Fleet, when Network Rail's North West Electrification programe is complete.
Until 2006, Merseyrail
Class 507
and Class 508
sets were regularly sent to this depot for wheel turning. A new wheel lathe has opened at Kirkdale TMD
thus ending the practice of sending units here.
Other units, including former Virgin
Voyagers and goods carriages/engines have been stabled here. The depot is located very close to Garston Freightliner
Terminal (Garston
Docks) and also not far from Widnes Intermodal Depot.
