History
The school was founded as chantry school in 1547 and received its name and a royal charter in 1608 by three men who travelled on horseback to London to get a royal charter from the king. They rode from Farnley Tyas, the nearby village and were set to London to get the charter by the local wealthy men from Almondbury who wanted a local school for their offspring to visit. It became a comprehensive school in 1976. It is now known as King James's School, its motto is Floreat Schola Almondburiensis which means in Latin: May Almondbury School Flourish. The School also has a school song which consists of several verses and the chorus: Floreat Schola (repeat x2) then a Floreat Schola with the word Almondburiensis on the end.Notable headmasters have been Taylor Dyson (1913-1945) and Harry Taylor (1951-1973).
