Ambrose Palmer was an Australian rules football
er who played for Footscray
in the VFL
, making his debut as a rover for Footscray in the 1933 season.
Not only did he have a football career but he was also a professional boxer, managed by Hugh D. McIntosh
and thus despite being with Footscray for a decade he only played 83 games. He was an Australian middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight boxing champion who won 57 professional bouts in his career, most between 1930 and 1936. Ironically, his football career ended after fracturing his skull - a far worse injury than he ever suffered boxing.
He later became a boxing trainer, notably for Jack Johnson Johnny Famechon
. and Len Dittmar. He was inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.
