America in Bloom is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting nationwide beautification programs and personal and community involvement through the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements.
America in Bloom provides educational programs, resources, and the challenge of a friendly competition between participating communities across the country.

Information

Since its founding in 2002, America in Bloom has grown to 180 cities participating, 38 states represented, 22 million people engaged, and more than 500,000 media impressions.

America in Bloom is a grass-roots urban renewal program which provides a framework and is a catalyst for community organizations to work together for visible improvements. It is the only program of its kind that offers one-on-one mentoring to participating communities and provides an extensive written evaluation detailing recommended improvements and enhancements.

In addition, America in Bloom (AIB) offers, via its website, a wealth of educational resources which have been vetted by subject matter.

Now in its sixth printing, America in Bloom's Best Ideas book offers more than 2000 easy to implement projects and best practices of participating towns and cities. The book was nominated for the prestigious American Horticultural Society National Book Award.

Through its national awards and mentoring program, AIB provides a holistic framework that helps towns harness untapped energy, talent, and resources, creating synergy among all demographics to champion greening, enhance environmental awareness, promote economic development, and improve quality of life.

Participation in the AIB program brings residents from every demographic together to create meaningful, visible, constructive projects, combining efforts of residents, businesses, and local government. These groups work on common goals in eight areas: floral displays, landscaped areas, urban forestry, turf and groundcover areas, environmental awareness, tidiness, heritage preservation, and community involvement. Once towns have participated in the program, they
continue with these efforts and build on them, having been impressed by its overall impact. With coaching from the judges, attitudes often change from “we can’t” to “we can, and we’ll keep getting better.

Registration for the 2011 program closes on February 28. The 2011 national symposium and awards will be held in Washington, DC on October 6–8, 2011. Everyone is welcome to attend. Check www.americainbloom.org for details and sponsorship opportunities.
