American Corporate Partners
Encyclopedia
American Corporate Partners (ACP) is a non-profit organization
based in New York City dedicated to helping recently separated members of the armed services transition to the private sector. ACP provides veterans who have served on active duty since 2001 with free career counseling and networking opportunities. ACP partners with American corporations and universities whose employees volunteer to mentor a veteran in a yearlong mentorship. During the year, pairs are encouraged to identify and work on a variety of transition issues including civilian career building, work-life balance, personal finance, and networking in the private sector.
ACP’s mission is to strengthen the relationship between employees of America’s leading corporations and those who have recently served our country, often at great personal sacrifice. ACP has three primary goals:
1. Assist in the transition from the United States Armed Forces
to the corporate sector for those who have served their country.
2. Grow and strengthen the network of veterans and corporate leaders in the private sector
.
3. Provide veterans with opportunities to leverage past military skills and experiences in their career development
.
Key Aspects
ACP is a nationwide mentoring program currently serving over 800 transitioning veterans. The program is administered through its office in New York City and has a presence in most major cities across the United States. ACP is not a formal jobs program. It is a tool for networking and long-term career development.
ACP considers Veteran Protégé applications from all interested and qualified service members who have served on active duty since 2001 and gives preference to those who have been deployed in support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as those with service-related disabilities. Spouses of those service members severely wounded or who died while serving are also welcome to apply. Mentors must be employees of ACP’s Corporate Partners. Corporate Mentors represent a wide array of business expertise, including disciplines such as management, finance, marketing, sales, law, logistics, operations, and teaching.
Protégés and Mentors are matched one-on-one according to their mentoring preferences. The mentoring commitment is for one year and pairs are encouraged to communicate frequently, with the goal of twelve ‘significant discussions’ during the year to be decided on mutually by the Mentor and Protégé.
ACP AdvisorNet
To assist more veterans with their professional goals, ACP launched a brand new program on Veterans Day 2011: ACP AdvisorNet. www.acp-advisornet.org
The first of its kind, ACP AdvisorNet is a free, online community connecting veterans with business leaders across the country. Through an interactive, easy-to-use, and ad-free interface, veterans can ask questions about career development, employment, and small business; and volunteer advisors can share advice on topics related to their expertise. Users can follow topics and Q&A threads as well as send private messages to initiate offline conversations.
ACP AdvisorNet is available to all current and former members of the US Military, their immediate family members, and business leaders looking to share their expertise and advice. And all users can see the professional and/or military backgrounds of other users, promoting an environment of accountability and trust.
Sidney E. Goodfriend, a retired investment banker, founded American Corporate Partners, which launched on Labor Day
of 2008. Mr. Goodfriend credits his own success in the corporate world to strong mentoring relationships and holds a great appreciation for the US Armed Forces. The founding corporate partners include Campbell Soup, General Electric
, Home Depot, Morgan Stanley
, PepsiCo
and Verizon. Within its first year, ACP received more than 1800 applications from US veterans across the country for 300 spots with a Corporate Mentor.
2009
ACP significantly expanded its program to welcome new Participating Institutions, locations, and an E-Mentoring component in 2009. The new Participating Institutions include Energy Future Holdings Corporation, IBM Corporation, MacAndrews & Forbes, News Corporation
, URS Corporation, and The University of Texas System.
The E-mentoring
component was developed in order to meet the needs of those veterans located outside of ACP's participating cities. The E-Mentoring program provides veteran applicants an opportunity to be mentored regardless of their geographical location. The E-mentoring component of the program does not require the Mentor and Protégé to meet face to-face. Instead, matched pairs use video-conferencing, email, and phone conversations to conduct the mentoring partnership.
2010
ACP continued to add partners and locations as the program grows. In February 2010, Bloomberg L.P.
, Deloitte and Harvard University
joined the program. In the summer of 2010, General Dynamics
, Goldman Sachs
, JPMorgan Chase & Co.
, Liberty Mutual Group, Omnicom Group
, and Siemens
joined the program. In the fall of 2010, AT&T
, Kansas State University
, HP, Travelers and Aon
all became Participating Institutions. ACP is supported by a bipartisan Advisory Council including retired Richard Myers
and Peter Pace
, former Senators Robert Dole and George Mitchell
, and former Cabinet-level officials Lawrence Summers
and Paul Wolfowitz
.
2011
With over 1,500 Mentors volunteering to mentor a Veteran Protégé, ACP is continuing to expand its program. Alcoa
and Barclays Capital
joined as Participating Institutions in January, BlackRock
and Occidental Petroleum Corporation joined ACP in the spring, and Accenture
