, and is generally considered to be one of the first major competitions of the Gymnastics season, as it is held in March or February of each year. In 1978-79 the event was sponsored by Dial and hence was known as the Dial American Cup. After Dial dropped sponsorship it went through several name changes including the McDonald's American Cup (1982–1996), Visa American Cup (1997–2004) and Tyson American Cup (2005–present).
