Non Khun was created as a minor district (King Amphoe) under Kanthararom district

 on September 1 1977, with the four tambon Non Kho, Pho, Bok and Nong Kung. It was upgraded to a full district on January 1 1988. Originally spelled โนนคูณ, it was later renamed to โนนคูน.
